Three Colonials drafted to MLB

GW baseball players Adam Belicic, Matt Walker and Eric Mitchell were selected by Major League Baseball organizations in the 2000 First-Year Player draft held June 5-7.

Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, freshman Greg Conden (9-2, 3.26 earned run average), also earned honors by being named to the Freshman All-America team by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

Belicic, a lefthanded pitcher and designated hitter, was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the 33rd round. The junior finished the season 9-4 with a 3.73 earned run average and 81 strikeouts in 99 innings pitched.

Senior outfielder Matt Walker was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round after finishing this season with a .410 batting average. Walker hit 13 home runs with 72 RBIs in 58 games. His father Tom Walker played Major League Baseball for two seasons as a member of the Tigers, Montreal Expos and St. Louis Cardinals.

GW’s junior catcher Eric Mitchell was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 42nd round.

The Colonials won a share of the A-10 West Division with Virginia Tech and also set a school record for wins finishing the 2000 season 37-21.
