GW’s Greatest Teams: 2 – 1956 Football

It was the greatest year GW football would ever know. Compiling a 7-1-1 regular season record, GW was invited to the only bowl game in school history – the Sun Bowl, where they faced host Texas Western (now UTEP) in El Paso.

The Colonials were 14-point underdogs to 9-1 Texas Western, but a spirited performance on New Year’s Day, 1957 led to a 13-0 victory.

I think they thought, `Who are these guys?’ Assistant Coach Andy Davis later said. They took us lightly, and we stomped them.

The team finished No. 17 in the Associated Press poll, the only time GW football would be ranked. The 8-1-1 mark (including three shutouts) was a school record.
