GW creates new athletics logo

The GW Department of Athletics will unveil the University's new logo at the Smith Center Friday as part of Midnight Madness, which begins at 10:30 p.m.

The new logo features an aggressive soldier carrying a GW pennant attached to the Washington Monument, according to a University press release. The University's new mark includes 11 variations and replaces the "Colonials" logo that has represented GW athletics for the past 11 years.

A committee that represents several different parts of the GW community worked with a design company to create an updated and spirited logo for the University.

"(The selection of the logo) was a very well thought-out process," student representative Jessica Paniceia said in a press release. "The committee was well-versed and drew upon the various University constituents. We took into account a lot of different ideas and feedback we received from the GW community."

The logo will be phased into GW team uniforms, departmental publications and officially licensed merchandise during the 1998-'99 academic year.
